The New Jersey Division of Taxation is in the process of rolling out a modernized tax-filing system in an effort to improve functionality and user experience. The upgrades will be rolled out in multiple phases, each focusing on different tax types. As each phase of the upgrade is implemented, the corresponding tax filing systems will be temporarily taken offline. The most notable taxes impacted by each phase are as follows:
Phase 1
- Sales and Use Tax
Phase 2
- Corporation Business Tax
- Employer Withholding (Payroll)
Phase 3
- Estate Tax
- Individual Income Tax
- Partnership
- Pass-Through Business Alternative Income Tax
This transition began on April 26, 2025, with Phase 1, which is expected to be completed by May 14, 2025. During this time, online filing and payment systems will be unavailable to taxpayers.
Any returns and payments due between May 1 and May 30, 2025, for the tax types included in Phase 1 will receive a 30-day automatic extension. For example, a return originally due May 20, 2025, will now be due June 20, 2025, with no penalties or interest.
Once the online platform is restored, taxpayers can create New Jersey Tax Portal accounts. To set up an online account, taxpayers will need:
- Taxpayer ID
- Line 1 of a recently filed return
- Four-digit PIN (included in Welcome Letter and can also be requested on the Business Tax/NJ Tax Portal PIN Requests page)
While creating an online account is not mandatory, it is recommended as it allows for faster processing and easier access to state tax records and filings.
A complete list of affected taxes is available on the official New Jersey website, and further information pertaining to the remaining phases will be posted as it becomes available.
